This series in four chapters is a collaboration of ideas and images with Bastian Castillo, model and gentleman of Berlin. We wanted to represent the warped perceptions we can have of our own bodies and appearance, especially when overweight and even after having lost weight. We don’t see ourselves realistically, and often not with kindness, especially in the face of teasing, criticism and direct and indirect judgemental attitudes. The process of controlling our weight and physical appearance can give us confidence and insight into more than our physical selves. It can be empowering.
The phrase “standing on the shoulders of giants” attributes one’s success, knowledge and vision to being able to build upon what has already been achieved before. In this case, we ourselves are the giants whose stories and experiences shape us, and upon whose shoulders we build our current and future selves.
